  • Stephen Schram

    Date: September 10, 2016

Time: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Underwater Adventures with Louis and Louise, written by Stephen T. Schram, is a children’s chapter book about two young lake trout who live in Lake Superior. The book is written from the fish’s perspective. Louis and Louise take the reader on exciting adventures: spending a special night around a cedar stump, going to an underwater birthday party, and participating in a race around a wreck. Respect, friendship, and kindness are core values woven throughout the storyline. The reader will meet many different kinds of fish living in the Great Lakes and be introduced to the ecological issues they face. Each chapter contains a beautiful illustration by Kimberly Vandenberg. Schram wrote the book to make science fun and to introduce young readers to issues impacting fish in the Great Lakes. People do not always understand the problems fish face because they can’t see what happens underwater. Hopefully, by giving fish a voice through Louis and Louise, this book will create awareness and ignite a spark that makes people care about our Great Lakes. Stephen Schram, a retired fisheries biologist, spent his thirty-three year career working on Lake Superior. Underwater Adventures with Louis and Louise is his first book.

I attended workshops with Tony Van Hasselt AWS, Sterling Edwards AWS and Bridgit Austin, all nationally known watercolor artists, and with Diana Randolph a teacher in the WITC district.  Now retired from a real estate sales career I am still semi-retired from busy active community involvements that do not allow me as much time as I would like for painting.  I feel I am still very much in a learning stage, but hope to start spending more time with brush in hand over the next months. I particularly enjoy trying to capture nature scenes that tell a story or provoke a feeling of being a participant in the natural world.  While my work has been largely realistic thus far, my goal is to loosen my style somewhat and produce more “painterly” pieces.  I’m also beginning to Read more [...]
